May 25, 2022 Weekly Challenge

I'm sure most of you have heard or read "All gave some, some gave all." If you haven't, this is the essence of Memorial Day. It's a day of remembering those that gave all.

With that in mind, I want to talk about the red poppy.

After World War I, a poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. called In Flanders Fields while he was on the front lines inspired the imagery of the red poppy as a symbol of those that gave all. I wasn't there, but many claimed that the poppy fields were most beautiful after they had been watered with the blood of so many young men.

For those of you that don't know, I served in the US Navy and I have been lucky enough not to lose anyone that I would consider a friend. However, I have lost several people that I knew and spent time with.

This topic really hits home for me, but I know it doesn't apply to everyone, so this week's challenge is Symbolic Flowers.

Tell me a story where a flower represents something to the character(s). I want this story to move me as much as the poem about poppies.
